Mount Union Sophomore Linebacker Hank Spencer Wins NCAA Elite 89 Award
SALEM, Va. -- Mount Union sophomore linebacker Hank Spencer
(Greencastle, Ind./North Putnam) has been award the NCAA Elite 89
Award.
The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the
highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals
site for each of the NCAA's 89 championships.
Spencer is a Computer Science major with a 4.0 grade point
average. He enrolled at Mount Union in the spring of 2012 and has
had a perfect 4.0 for five consecutive semesters.
He has started 12 games this season with 49 tackles, 5.0 tackles
for loss and six pass breakups as top ranked Mount Union plays No.
5 ranked UW-Whitewater Friday night at 7 pm at the Stagg Bowl for
the national championship.
The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true
essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has
reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship
level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest
academic standard among his or her peers.
Eligible student-athletes are sophomores or above who have
participated in their sport for at least two years with their
school. They must be an active member of the team, traveling and a
designated member of the squad size at the championship. All ties
are broken by the number of credits completed.
