SALEM, Va. – No. 1 ranked Mount Union suffered a 52-14
loss to No. 5 ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater in the NCAA Division III
National Championship game – the Stagg Bowl Friday in front
5,371 fans at Salem Stadium in Salem, Va.
After missing the playoffs a year ago, the Warhawks (15-0) win
their fifth national championship, while Mount Union (14-1) takes
its first loss in 30 games since 2011 Stagg Bowl – a 13-10
loss to Whitewater.
After falling behind 21-7, Mount Union rallied to get a score
just before halftime to make it 21-14 but the Raiders had four
second half turnovers to hamper their comeback chances.
Whitewater junior quarterback Matt Behrendt earned Stagg Bowl
Most Outstanding Player honors as he threw four touchdown passes on
20-of-28 passing and rushed for a season-high 56 yards.
Jake Kumerow had seven catches for 103 yards while he and Tyler
Huber each caught two touchdown passes and Jordan Ratliffe ran for
147 yards with two touchdowns for the Warhawks.
Mount Union junior quarterback Kevin Burke (Westlake/Lakewood
St. Edward) completed 22-of-31 passes for 316 yards and ran for a
touchdown. Sophomore wide receiver Brian Gainer (Tampa,
Fla./Steinbrenner) had seven catches for 109 yards while freshman
Bradley Mitchell (St. Clair Shores, Mich./South Lake) rushed for a
score to lead the Raider offense.
