Ohio Northern will host the 2013 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC)
Men’s Tennis Championship Tuesday-Saturday, April 30-May 4.
Eight teams competed in the quarterfinals finals on campus sites on
Tuesday. The four remaining teams will via for the 2013
Tournament title. The semifinals on Friday and the finals on
Saturday will be held at the Linder Family Tennis Center in Mason,
Ohio.
This season Ohio Northern earned its third OAC Regular-Season
title in last four years with a perfect 9-0 record (15-4) and
earned the #1 seed. The Polar Bears advanced with a 5-0 win over #8
Wilmington and will take on #4 Mount Union (5-4). ONU is in search
of its tenth tournament title.
ONU has been lead by the two-time OAC Player of the Year senior
Joey Frank (Gahanna / Columbus Academy) at the #1 singles position
with a 7-2 record against OAC competition. Junior Do Thai
(Columbus / Bishop Ready) went undefeated in single play with a 9-0
OAC record at the #2 position. Frank teamed up with Do Thai to
compile an 8-1 OAC doubles record at the #1 position.
The Polar Bears will also look to junior Josh Saunders
(Centerville) at the #3 position with a 7-1 record and freshman
John Mostowy (Mason) at the #3/4 position with an 8-0 record.
Saunders and Mostowy teamed up for an 8-0 OAC record at the #2
doubles positions.
The Purple Raiders defeated #5 John Carroll, 5-2, to move
forward to the semifinals. Mount Union will be led by senior #1
single player sophomore Nick Fockler (North Canton/Hoover) with a
7-2 conference record and senior Nate Fockler (North Canton/Hoover)
with a 3-6 record at the #2 position. They teamed up for a
4-5 record at the #1 doubles position against league opponents.
Sophomore Ben Swope (N. Huntingdon, PA/ Norwin) at the #5
position went 6-3 in the OAC and teamed with freshman Josh Duerr
(Uniontown/Lake) for a 6-3 record at the #2/3 positions.
Capital earned the #2 seed with a 7-2 league record and defeated
#7 Heidelberg, 5-0, in the quarterfinals and will take on #3
Otterbein (6-3) in the semifinals.
Capital has been led by freshman Spencer Walter (Hilliard/
Hilliard Davidson) at the #3/4 positions with a 7-1 OAC record and
Jared Judson (Dublin/ Dublin Jerome) at the #5/6 positions with a
6-1 record.
Walter team up with freshman Luke Buchanan (Westerville /
Westerville Central) for a 5-4 record at #1 doubles. Judson
and freshman G.C. DiMichaelangelo (Westerville / St. Francis
DeSales) tallied a 7-2 record in doubles play.
Otterbein finished the regular-season with a 6-3 conference
record to claim the #3 seed and defeated #6 Marietta, 5-0, in the
quarterfinals.
The Cardinals are led by freshman #1 singles player Will Willson
(Commerce Twp., Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) and junior #2
singles player Ryan Shutt (Coshocton). Both tallied a 7-2 record
against OAC competition. Freshman David Seckel (Bexley) went 8-1 at
the #3 position and teamed up with Willson for a 8-1 record at #1
doubles.
The semifinals and finals will take place at the Linder Tennis
Center. The semifinals will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday and the
finals will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
