Four Named Capital One Academic All-America Cross Country/Track & Field; Mount Union's Mary Mahoney Named Academic All-American of the Year

COMPLETE RELEASE

Mount Union's Mary Mahoney (Ashtabula/St. John-St. Paul) was named Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for NCAA Division III Women's Track & Field as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Mahoney is the second Mount Union student-athlete this year to be selected Academic All-American of the Year joining Nick Driskill in football.  Both will be on a ballot to choose a national Academic All-American of the Year.

It is the third straight year that Mahoney was an Academic All-America First Team selection and she is one of three Purple Raiders on this year's team along with senior Daryn Herman on the second team and junior Emily Mazzaferri on the third team.

Mahoney was a 14-time conference champion in track and field and an eight-time All-American that won two national titles -- the 2012 outdoor 200 meters and 2013 indoor 400 meters.  She was four-time Ohio Athletic Conference Sprinter of the Year and twice had been named the Great Lakes Region Sprint Athlete of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.  Off the track, she has graduated with a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science major with a 3.97 grade point average.

Herman was a three-time All-American and five-time conference champion that won the 400 meter hurdle outdoor conference title and was part of a 4x400 meter relay team that swept indoor and outdoor conference titles this past season.  Off the track, she graduated with a bachelor's degree in Public Health and a 3.92 grade point average.

Mazzaferri is a four-time All-American and an eight-time conference champion including sweeping indoor and outdoor 800 meter titles this past year.  She is an English and Education major with a 3.95 grade point average.

Ohio Northern senior Alison Steinbrunner has been named First Team for the first time.

This is the first time she has been named to the national ballot.

In cross country, she won her fourth straight OAC title and second consecutive NCAA III Regional. At the NCAA III Championships, she finished second to earn her third straight All-American honor.

During the track season, Steinbrunner broke two of her own school records and also broke two OAC marks. She also qualified for the NCAA III Indoor Championships in the 5,000-meter run.
