(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - Wilmington College Athletics is excited to announce the reinstatement of the Men's and Women's Golf and Tennis programs. These four additions will bring the total number of NCAA Intercollegiate programs to 20.
"We are thrilled to bring back our Golf and Tennis programs and provide opportunities to new male and female student-athletes to join the Wilmington community," said Director of Athletics
Matt Croci. "Both sports are incredibly popular in our area of Ohio. Alumni of both programs have remained vocal in their hopes of a return and we've secured both internal and external support to build with excellence in mind."
The Quakers golf and tennis programs were discontinued at the conclusion of the 2012-13 academic year. Joe Freudenberg (2022), Dick Fortner (2003), and Peter Sturtevant Jr. (2018) were all Quakers Hall of Famers as members of the men's tennis program. Freudenberg was the 2010 Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Men's Tennis Player of the Year, becoming the first Quaker to earn the honor. He is the all time program leader in singles victories and was named First Team All OAC three times during his time at Wilmington.
Andrea Gibson, Megan Stiltner, and Jessie Heslar of the Quakers women's tennis team were all named All-OAC twice during their time at Wilmington.
Wilmington President Corey Cockerill added "The return of golf and tennis reflects a broader commitment to expanding opportunities that support student interests in athletics, recreation, and lifelong wellness – squarely aligned with our strategic plan."
A national search for two full-time head coaches, one for golf and one for tennis, will begin immediately. Those individuals will recruit throughout the 2025-2026 academic year in preparation for their programs to begin competition in the 2026-2027 year.
